Soul Surfer; the Bethany Hamilton story

    Bethany Hamilton, Soul Surfer

This past weekend, the movie Soul Surfer opened in theatres across the country.  For those of you who may not be familiar with the story, Bethany is the young girl from Hawaii who lost her left arm in a shark attack while surfing.  Even at a young age, Bethany was on her way to becoming one of the most accomplished surfers in the sport and had already won a number of impressive competitions.  After losing her arm, many thought that Bethany would never surf again; including  Bethany herself.  But, with determination and an unshakeable faith in God’s plan for her life, Bethany proved otherwise.

I saw this film this past weekend and if you have ten bucks that isn’t going towards gas for your car- ($4.39 a gal for regular today! ) – I would highly recommend it.  The scenery is beautiful, the surfing shots fantastic and best of all, the faith and  trust Bethany (and her family) have in Jesus Christ really shine through.

Bethany’s faith and courage have been an inspiration to all of us living here in the islands and now, through this film, millions more will have the opportunity to hear her story and to see how  faith in God can turn the most terrible of tragedies in to amazing victory.  May God continue to shape and use the life of this remarkable young woman whose life he is using to reach others in ways she would have previously never have thought possible.

Bethany’s verse as quoted in the movie:

“For I know the plans I have for you” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”  Jeremiah 29:11

Good job Bethany, good job!

Grace and blessings, Cindy

  1. Can’t wait to see the movie. She is a remarkable young woman. Gas at $4.39? That’s cheap. It’s $4.51 here on Kauai.

[ Yikes! The price of living in Paradise just went up – ouch! ]

  2. It’s good to get a boost of joy to our spirits right now. Thanks for bringing our attention to this.

[Thanks Jeane! I hope everyone will take the opportunity to see this movie. It’s rare these days for a Hollywood film to portray Christians and the Bible in a positive light. This film does both! Grace and blessings! C]

  3. Saw it today in Indiana. Beautiful. Inspiring.
We’d recommend it for all ages.
    Very real and refreshing.
Praising God for Bethany, her family, friends,
and this message of courage and perseverance.

[ Awesome! Thanks so much for your feed back! Grace and blessings to you and your family! C]

  4. Third time I’ve tried to post a comment. I guess the evil one doesn’t want me to post this. Anyway, I just saw the movie with my almost 12 y/o son and his friend who has never been to church before. Pray with me that that seed takes root. I also love seeing a movie like this that truly lifts up God’s name with big name stars in it! I don’t know how you can be in a movie like this an not have your life changed. I pray that it affected Dennis Quaid, Helen Hunt and the others in a positive way. Kevin Sorbo(?) was in What If…so maybe he is a believer? Anyone know?

Have a blessed resurrection Sunday, Cindy and God bless you for a great blog!

[ Hi Kim, I’m so glad you kept trying until your comment was posted. I wonder if any one else has been having the same problem ???? I’m really pleased to hear that you were able to go see the movie with your son and his friend. I’m with you, I don’t see how anyone could be involved with the movie and not be greatly impacted. We should definitely keep the whole cast and crew in our prayers that God would bring much fruit from this wonderful story. About the time the movie came out, one of our local papers did a story on Bethany and they reported how Bethany and Anna Sophia Robb (the girl who played her in the movie) had become wonderful friends and that Anna had taken Bethany to Colorado to teach her to snow board.

A Happy Resurrection Sunday to you also Kim and thank you so much for your continued love and encouragement! C]
