Praying in the Name of Jesus

I was amazed to hear from a friend of mine the other day that her daughter and son-in-law, (both of whom hold leadership positions in a Bible-believing Evangelical Church) had informed her that they no longer needed to pray in the name of Jesus, as God already knows in whose name they are praying. Really?  I was stunned!  Christians, not praying in the name of Jesus!  I know the world is pressuring Christians in public forums to no longer use the name of Jesus, but, in our own homes and churches. Unbelievable!  Why would people, who should know better adopt this nonsense?

The diabolical insidiousness of this to me is obvious. There is power and authority in the name of Jesus, and, the evil one (who knows his time is short) is well aware of this. By taking our greatest spiritual weapon from us, he can neutralize our best efforts as believers, for what is a gun without a bullet, or a cannon with out its fodder? For the name of Jesus is the power behind our prayers; the fuse, by which, our prayers and requests before God are ignited.

First of all, I cannot imagine, why, anyone would want to exclude that precious name from their prayers. Yes, God knows in whose name we are praying. But, is  that the point?

It’s not that the name of Jesus is magic, a mantra or anything of that sort. But, we are told in scripture that all power and authority is given to him, and by, extension to us, when, we call upon his name.

In Luke 10:19, Jesus said:

“Behold, I give you power to tread on serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy and, nothing shall by any means hurt you.”

This is Jesus talking and he is telling us how to have power over the enemy, just as he has. How is this possible? First of all, we have to understand that we have no power of our own; the only power, we possess is by and through his name and, it is the only name that demons recognize and respond to as demonstrated in this next verse and many others.

“At sunset people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one he healed them. Moreover, demons came out of many people shouting, ‘You are the son of God, but, he rebuked  them and would not allow them to speak because they knew he was the Messiah.”  Luke 4:40-41

Folks, as most of you are aware, the spiritual battle is increasing by the day, the demonic manifesting all around us like cancerous weeds; weeds sowing seeds of destruction, mayhem, hopelessness and depression. Now is not the time to abandon, our greatest weapon, praying in the name of Jesus. And, I would also encourage setting in your minds ahead of time, when faced with an unexpected volatile situation such as that in Boston to be ready to call on the name of Jesus in rebuke of the demons behind the human perpetrators. As the darkness darkens, the light grows  brighter. I believe, therefore, we will see many miracles in Jesus name in these last dark days before his coming. Let’s be sure, we know in whose name we are praying and use it! The enemy trembles at that Holy and precious name! And, we bow in humble acceptance of the Lord’s willingness to share it with us. How blessed are we!

Grace and blessings to you all!  Keep praying in the precious name and powerful name of Jesus!

And, as always – “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem, they shall prosper, who love thee’. Psalm 122:6

Watching and waiting with YOU for the soon return of Jesus!  Cindy

  1. Yes, there is power in the Name of Jesus ! Are these folk who think they no longer need the Precious Name of Jesus into the Spiritual Formation deception ? “Jesus O’ How sweet The Name ” ! “His Name is as oinment poured forth” filling the whole earth like the ointment Mary poured on Him before His sacrifice !

    Love in His Name,

    Rich & Joyce

[Thanks Rich and Joyce, I have no idea how this couple came to this particular line of thinking, I am quite certain it is not being taught in the church they attend – or at least, I hope not. I attend a branch of the same one and cannot imagine it being taught there. Maybe they picked it up from a teacher on the radio or television or perhaps, it just seemed to make sense in their own minds. Whatever the case, its a dangerous and fallacious road to be on in my opinion. Many blessings and love in Yeshua to both of you! C]

  2. AMEN, sister! In the name of Jesus, I rebuked a demon that had come to torment me many years ago. I was frozen with fear, but I called on Jesus through my spirit, and that foul entity was cast away instantly.

At the name of Jesus, every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:10-11

    Thanks Cindy, excellent post!
    Tamra

[Thanks Tamra! I too, have had that experience and can testify first hand that the name of Jesus is the only thing things ungodly forces will listen and respond to. They may begrudingly leave, but, they will leave, they have no choice! Amen and Amen! Praise the Holy and awesome name of Jesus! C]

  3. Well written sister. There is no forgiveness of sins without JESUS and HIS name is the NAME above all names.

1Co_6:11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Eph_5:20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Php_2:10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

Col_3:17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Blessings on you and your family. ….. Steve Hollander

  4. John 14:13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it. If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

  5. A few years ago we left a ministry because of it’s unwillingness to do what God’s Word say’s to do. But before we did I spent some time seeking to help the leadership to see it’s simple error.
I did this as there was a deaconess who asked me to. She shared with my wife and I a dream she had several times and it bothered her.

I am going to share the dream not that it’s reveals much but demonstrates the very thing you are describing.

She said she had seen demons sitting in the ceiling or rafters of the ceiling of the church over the congregation. When I asked her what she thought that it meant she did not really know, if anything.

She was very bothered by this and went to the leadership about it. When I asked her about it and events that unfolded after that.
She told me that a rift had developed between pastors and one left. The other one had to go to counseling.

The one that was left had become the senior pastor. And history repeated itself in that the senior pastor then left and the first guy came back.

Why should I bring this all up?
Only the name of Jesus by His shed blood will move the enemy from his place over us. We are without remedy if we do not use His name. The name above all others.

There are many churches where the enemy is sitting in a position over it simply because they refuse to be under the Word/Jesus/ Blood of the Lamb.

Matthew 16:13 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?

14 And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.

15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?

16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Who do you say he is? I would venture to say that the name of Jesus is the key.

  6. Dear Cindy,
Interesting timing (for me) as yesterday a former pastor friend and now missionary told this story: he was in Africa and a brother was praying over a seriously demon-possessed woman. he thought ‘I’ll just go in there and give this brother a hand and we’ll take care of this.’ He went in and began to enter into prayer when a dark, demonic cloud invaded his brain. “You don’t have to believe this, but I know what happened,” he said. He said his mind seemed to retreat somewhere and go away and he fell to the ground. Before he could pass out, he yelled out one word: “Jesus!” Immediately the darkness fled, his mind returned and he stood up. The other brother who was praying for the woman, also there yesterday, asked to comment further. He said: “You testified of the Son before men and He testified of you before the Father. If you hadn’t testified of the Son before men, He would not have testified for you before the Father.” Simple as that.

  7. WOW, in the name of Jesus, as you said, is not a mantra, it is a governmental position; name means the character, authority and nature of said name
and in this case of petitioning, it is the “C.A.N. do” of Jesus
    as a royal priesthood we share in the character of Jesus, and are invited to ask…what so ever we will, according to His will;

    in His name, in the heavens, we stand in the presence of God by the authority vested in us through the Holy Spirit, to enter by the blood of the Lamb into this Holy of Holies;

    in Him, we are sons, we are partakers of the nature of Christ, and we are transformed, renewed, changed;

any and each of us would be plumb STUPID to consider standing in our own name, and not intentionally clarifying our position to the accuser…especially since we have been extended permission and invitation to come boldly in THIS time of need by Jesus, Himself…

thank you for sharing your bafflement at such foolishness, I agree,
    in the name of Jesus,
    Janie

  8. Even if God already knows, why wouldn’t a Christ follower want to speak His beautiful name? Why wouldn’t the Father want to hear His beloved Son’s name spoken by those bought & purchased by His beloved Son’s blood?? This makes no sense at all. Only the enemy would want to stop people from speaking the name of Jesus. SO sad that those claiming to know Jesus would fall for that!!!! SO much sadness in these days!!! I will proclaim the name of Jesus my Savior, along with the rest of His bride. Amen.

    Blessings in Christ Jesus, Cindy

  9. I’m not clear if this couple decided they never needed to pray in the name of Jesus, or if they decided they didn’t need to always pray in the name of Jesus. Most of my prayers are chatting with God and I don’t need to tell Him to Whom I belong. But if you are rebuking the adversary it’s always a good idea to assert the authority given to us in His name.

[Hi Thom, good point. Of course, when we’re just “chatting” with the Father, surely, he knows whose name we are praying in. I’m not sure, but, I think my friend discovered this with her family at a dinner time prayer, when, they simply said, “Amen” – instead, of in Jesus name, Amen. Informing, them when she queried, “God already knows in whose name we are praying. Well, in my humble opinion, any formal prayer especially in the presence of others should be acknowledged in the name of Jesus. If you’re alone and talking to Jesus, while driving down the freeway, perhaps, not so necessary. One way or the other, the name of Jesus should always be maximized as opposed to minimized – something some of us may need to guard against – something we should never become complacent about. Many blessings Thom and thanks so much for writing and sharing with us here. C]

  10. Ignore the name of Jesus at your own peril . I was saved from the hands robbers who wanted to kill me by the name of Jesus . While If was shouting for help from my neighbours to come for my rescue , my little daughter who was 6 yrs old shouted the name Jesus and the robbers ran away . There is no substitute to the name of JESUS .

[Amen Pastor! Thank you so much for writing, it’s a privilege to hear from you in Kenya! May the Lord bless you and keep you safe – safe in the name of Jesus! C]
