Of heroes, new and old

There’s a country and western song by Willie Nelson some of you might be familiar with called “My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys.”  And its true, we Americans have had a long romance with the Wild West, especially when portrayed on the silver screen by larger than life heros, like John Wayne and Glenn Ford.  When I was a kid, almost every Saturday afternoon matinee was a western of some sort.  Armed with popcorn and Junior Mints, I rooted for the “good” guys as they rode and blasted their way across the american southwest, coming to the rescue of some besieged fort or settlement and usually just in the nick of time.

Whether cowboys of the last century were truly heroes or not, may be a matter of  question.  But, what is not in question, is that these symbols of real life heroes, stood for a way of life in this country, which we loved and were willing to defend.  But, that was then;  today, is much different and today, we are hard pressed to find heroes.  We live, in a day and time, unfortunately, when heros are as “scarce as hens teeth.”   But this past week, in a speech before the United Nations, there is in my opinion, one man who stands head and shoulders over anyone I can think of, foreign or domestic, who, by virtue of his humble, courageous and honest speech is a world class heroe and that man is Israeli Prime Minister Benjamen Netanyahu

For any of you have not already listened to his speech at the UN on September 25, I strongly urge you to do so.  I fully believe that God has raised this man up, for such a time as this.  The opposition he faces is great, the odds overwhelming, the task ahead daunting, but, in spite of all this, we, as believers know, this is when God does his best work!   There is going to be a showdown in the middle east which will affect every one living on the planet.  And, when friendless Israel, has their backs firmly against the wall, we will see God once again, come to their rescue  with great might and power “parting the red sea”  as it were, on their behalf.

When I listened to “Bibi” as he is known speak,  I was impressed by his calm demeanor, his earnestness and his determination.  He, with great courage, called to task those who not only deny the holocaust, but, deny their right,(Israel)  to even exist!   Bibi also called to shame,  those, who through cowardice and/or malice, (our current administration included)  aide and abet, those who willingly do so.  Speaking  of the rights of his people to the land, Netanyahu said, “we are not strangers to this land, it is the land of our forefathers“.  In  saying this,  he established the historic God given right the Jews have to the land on which they live.   The fact, that there are detractors and spoilers, of God’s covenant people, Israel, is nothing new.   I was reminded of this in my study of the 2nd chapter of Nehemiah this week.   The last two verses of the second chapter, say it so well.
“But, when Sanballatt the Horonite,  Tobiah the Ammonite official and Gershem the Arab heard about it, (the plans to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem) they mocked and ridiculed us.  What is this you are doing?”  they asked. “Are you rebelling against the king?”  I answered them by saying, “The God of heaven will give us success. We are his servants and will start rebuilding, but as for you, you have no share in Jerusalem or any claim or historic  right to it.”
Wow, sounds just like today, doesn’t it?  The Palestinians and the Jews, over who has the rights to Jerusalem.   This has been a long  battle, but, God is drawing it to its final conclusion.  Thank  God, for a modern day Moses!  And while, much of  Israel, does not yet recognize their Messiah, with  events now unfolding,  they soon will!   Then, Yeshua, will hear those words he has been longing to hear for the past two thousand years,  “Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord!”

Shalom and Pray for the peace of Jerusalem, they shall prosper  who love thee!

  1. excellent article! We must pray, pray, pray for Israel in their time of need. For the world may be against Israel, but as a christian we are in the world but not of the world, and we stand with you Israel.
