No Pants Public Transit Day January 11, 2024 Phoenix, Arizona
“Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame …” Philippians 3:19
I really did not know this was a thing – No Pants Public Transit Day – until I heard it from Matt Walsh on his program this morning. Apparently one day a year various cities make pants optional for those using public transportation. We can thank New York for this fad when in 2002 the first No Pants Subway ride was held. And while reportedly only seven people participated in that first event the idea quickly gained traction with at least 60 cities worldwide holding their own events in the ensuing years – Phoenix, Arizona being the most recent on January 11th.
Trading Dignity for Depravity
While some may think this is much to do about nothing – just a harmless day of quirky fun sponsored by the city one has to wonder why the city would have an interest in promoting an event like this. It really boggles the mind. More revenue? A kitschy idea for renewing interest in public transportation? It just doesn’t make sense – why? Because it doesn’t make sense. There is no logical reason for a tax funded city agency to promote an event that would have been considered an arrest able offense not that many years ago. The only real reason then is because the current culture has slipped so far from what was once considered decent that people no longer have any perception as to what that is. Talk about a calling card for every pervert and pedophile in the area. And for those college age young people who think it’s no big deal and would argue that more skin is shown on any given day at the beach then I would say this – “this isn’t the beach” and I can choose to go to the beach or not go to the beach but at no time should tax paying citizens be exposed to this kind of foolishness when they just want to get to and from work without looking at someone’s near bare behind.

1950’s NYC Subway
You’ve Come A Long Way Baby
I was born in the mid 1950’s. I remember when people looked and acted with a sense of decorum. I also remember the 1960’s when even a conservative gal like myself thought it somewhat thrilling to be dropping some of the old norms. Of course, I had no understanding at that young age why some things were the way that they were but that didn’t matter. And now, here we are nearly 70 years later in a culture that is barely recognizable as civil.
The Death of Shame and the Rise of Entitlement
We hear that term entitlement a lot lately. Whenever someone demands something in a rude fashion we say they are acting “entitled”. But in reality our culture has become one big exercise in entitlement. “Don’t tell me what to do”. No one can be shamed any more. The whole idea of shaming is considered cruel and archaic which is unfortunate because shaming is actually a necessary component in getting one to understand when they have done something wrong
“Johnny, why did you kick your sister? You hurt her and now she has a bruise on her leg”.
Johnny is confronted with his actions which causes him to feel guilt and shame which is necessary in correcting his behavior.
But when guilt and shame are removed Johnny feels justified in his actions – she used my favorite pen without asking – so, whether its true or not he has successfully transferred himself from perpetrator to victim.
So in the absence of guilt or shame we can keep ourselves in a perpetual state of victimhood. Top that off with “who is it hurting anyway” and we have a whole society of people who absolutely refuse to conform to any kind of standards other than the ones they make for themselves.
So, if I’m on the bus in my skivvies that is my choice and who is it hurting anyway. End of story.
And with that kind of reasoning there is really not much more one can say.

“Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not …” Roman’s 1:28
“Pray for the peace of Jerusalem they shall prosper who love thee ” Psalm 122:6
Watching and waiting with YOU for the soon return of Jesus! Cindy
Hi Cindy,
A couple of thoughts. First, …The ‘woke’ people have no problem shaming those who reject their doctrines. That seems to be the main thrust of social media. I’m about your age and I have never seen a more powerful tool for shaping consensus and conformity.
Second, Romans 1 also says “They became vain in their reasoning and their senseless minds were darkened. While claiming to be wise they became fools.” We also know that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
It’s sad to see the steepness of the decline. A Godless world is not ‘godless’.

As you know, I’ve blogged on “Dignity” here: https://stevekerp.wordpress.com/2022/08/10/a-fuller-dignity/ and the collapse of culture can be recognized by the abandonment of decorum. A real problem I see is with young Christians or maybe pastors seeking relevance who may say, “hey, this looks like fun. If I participate, can I lose my salvation?” And since the prevailing sentiment seems to be “No”, the corruption within the church will also continue.
The “no garment” part suggests Matthew 22:11 – and I’ve concluded that the “outer darkness” part of the story pertains to these “easy believism” Christians who trust Christ to forgive them, but cast aside His Lordship like some of these Phoenix public transit riders cast aside their pants and their dignity.
