Let It Rain

Image result for rain

“Drip down, O heavens, from above. And let the clouds pour down righteousness. Let the earth open up and salvation bear fruit. And righteousness spring up with it. I, the Lord have created it”.  Isaiah 45:8

This has been a week of high emotion for many people. The rain that fell as Donald Trump began his inauguration speech viewed by some as God’s favor  – by others a symbol of mourning. As one tweet put it “the sky is weeping” and indeed it was but not for the reason you might think.

I guess it all depends upon the viewpoint that you hold.

I have a funny story that relates to this. It involves my five year old granddaughter – the one we affectionately call “Cake”.

It was Friday night this past week and my daughter, son-in-law and the kids were at the grocery store shopping for groceries. The plan was to get their groceries and then pick up a family friendly movie at Red Box to watch when they got home.  A storm had been brewing all afternoon and before they finished shopping it had become a down pour. Torrential rain, thunder and lightning. So much so that the lights in the grocery store went out and the generator had to kick on. Needless to say, they rapidly completed their shopping and started for home. No Red Box movie.

As they were driving home, my five year old granddaughter says to her mom, “Mom, it’s God that makes the rain, right?” “Yes, Cake”, she said. “It’s God who makes the rain.” A few seconds later after she had had some time to think about this Cake said,  “Mom, it’s God, who decides when its going to rain, right”. “Yes, Cake”, my daughter said. “It’s God who decides when it will rain”.  A few seconds later from the back seat of the car where she was sitting, clearly disgruntled, she said – “Then Mom, if it’s God who decides when it is going to rain – then it’s his fault we didn’t get a movie!” Bahhhh … ahh …. ahhh

Oh,  my goodness! The reasoning and logic of a five year old, right?  Yet, this is the same kind of logic that is being practiced across the country right now – not by children – but by fully grown adults. People who cannot accept the fact that things did not turn out the way that they had hoped and are looking for someone to blame.

My daughter explained to Cake that God has a big job in watering the earth. Pointing out to her that its the rain that makes the grass green,  flowers bloom and most importantly the broccoli that Cake loves so much to grow. “Cake”, she said. “God’s plans are bigger than our plans. Do you understand”? Well, no she didn’t and in spite of repeating it  – “God’s plans are bigger than our plans” was not at all convinced.

The next morning, Cake was up eating her morning cereal and was watching Superbook, the Christian animated series of Bible stories for children on TV. This particular morning it was on creation. As Cake is watching the program, my daughter ask her if she remembered what they were talking about the night before. Perhaps inspired by the dramatic account of the events of creation she was watching on TV  and the drama of the storm the night before, Cake suddenly exclaimed – “Mom, God’s plans are bigger than our plans!” Her face lighting up like the light bulb that had just gone off in her head, she went on to exclaim – “it’s so exciting, it makes my teeth want to fall out of my head!”

Out of the mouths of babes! When is the last time any of us have exclaimed with such child like exuberance our wonder and marvel at God. Yes, sweetie, makes Grandma’s teeth want to fall out of her head too – and not ’cause I need dentures!

It’s sad to think that there are so many for whom that light bulb has not yet come on. So many who do not understand that what they view as restrictive might actually be blessing. That what we want might not actually be the best for us. In fact the Bible tells us –

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”. Jeremiah 29:11

Hope and a future …….

The rain softly fell as the 45th President took the podium an indication I believe that the Lord has confirmed his favor ….. not so much upon the man that just took office but upon a people who sought him for a blessing and believed him for an answer …..the man, but the instrument God has chosen in the facilitation of that blessing  ….

…… and, as rain brings forth fruit in its season ….. so is a harvest in coming ….. for his ways are higher than our ways, his plans bigger than ours … and that in the words of a sweet little girl called Cake makes me so excited my teeth want to fall out of my head!

“Pray for the peace of Jerusalem they shall prosper who love thee” Psalm 122:6

Watching and waiting with YOU for the soon return of Jesus!
