King America, King World

“And he went out riding conquering and to conquer” Revelation 6:2

Eighty years ago, a strange and enigmatic man arrived in the small south eastern town of Moab, Utah. Who he was, where he had come from and what circumstances brought him to this part of the world is largely unknown. It is said that his name was Aaron Andrew (he spelled it Andeew) and he called himself, King America, King World.

He spoke with an accent and it was rumored that he was a political refugee, a Turk perhaps or maybe an exile from some other exotic foreign country most likely the middle East. He seemed harmless enough except for a strange penchant for striding military style along the highway on Sundays in front of where he was camped. Dressed in his great-coat, he was a strange if not striking figure to see with his self fashioned copper medals flashing in the sun across his chest and his ever-present sword swathed at his side.

Other than that he apparently lived a quiet life camped on the out skirts of town with his mule and his goats for about a year and a half before the local population unsettled by his eccentric ways decided it was time for him to move on and politely but firmly showed him the way out. But not before he had created an immense rock sculpture in detailed relief of a haughty appearing military man sitting astride a steed that remain to this day as enigmatic as the man himself.

If you look closely at the photo above you can see the date 1935 and these words:

MCF HHAESUS, America, Aharron Andeew, King America, King World

I grew up in southeast Utah and graduated from HS in Moab. I had never heard the story of “King America, King World, nor had I seen the sculpture in spite of it being just off the highway on the outskirts of town until I was grown and had kids of my own. I took these photos sometime back in the 80’s and as you can see, they are quite detailed. In fact, if you look closely you can see the continents of the world are carved in to both the helmet and the buttons on the collar. *Clicking on the images will enlarge them.

It had been many years since I had seen these photos and inadvertently came across them the other day as I was browsing through a stack of old photo albums. It struck me when I saw them that it has been 80 years since Aaron Andrew carved this larger than life sculpture in to the red rocks of the Moab desert. And, while not prophetic in nature ( or is it?) I felt it was at least a story worth the telling – the symbolism alone worth thinking about –

King America (Babylon), King World – a mystery like Aaron Andrew whose covert identity will soon be revealed.

And America (like Moab) whose descendants from once godly people were the result of the incestuous relationship between Lot and his daughters after Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed and  who also became the on again off again, pagan enemies of the Hebrew people. Genesis 19:30-36

An interesting set of correlations wouldn’t you say?

As an epilogue to this story. After leaving Moab, Aarron traveled North to Provo where he was at some point placed in to a mental institution where he later died. Leaving one to wonder what Aaron had been saying or doing to lead authorities to believe that he was insane and should be institutionalized. Mental asylums of that era more places of torture and torment than they were places of treatment at that time, sad to say.

*For more on Aaron Andrew, King America, King World check out these articles by a couple of local writers who researched the story well. You can find them both by clicking here. One story is about half way down and includes the only known photo of Aaron and the other is highlighted at the top of the page and is titled “King of the World” by Robert Dudek.

Also, if anyone has any idea what the first few words MCF HHAESUS might mean, please let us know. And as always,

“Pray for the peace of Jerusalem they shall prosper who love thee” Psalm 122:6

Watching and waiting with YOU for the very soon return of Jesus!  Cindy

    Searching HHA I found this

MCF HHAESUS In Hebrew Gematria = 441

Most likely what had been revealed to this man was given by what indwelt him.
We all know from scripture who the king or ruler of this world is.

After viewing the link there is little doubt where it comes from.

  2. I also found this searching ESUS

    And this

In the 1950s Moab became the so-called “Uranium Capital of the World”
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moab,_Utah
Was he a prophet? Of sorts?
How close was this sculpture to where the Uranium was found?
King America King of the world?
    Nuclear power?

    Searching Aaron Andrew found this

    Message?

    • Thanks Jeff, I had looked up those same things too but missed the most obvious one of all. I grew up in uranium country and was born in the 50’s when uranium was king. I’m not sure exactly how far the sculpture is from the Mi Vida mine where uranium was discovered but, it is very close to the mansion over looking Moab that Charlie Steen built after his discovery. And, yes …. nuclear power may be exactly the point.

  3. Very interesting story. Makes one wonder….

  4. I guess the thing is we may never really know what was going through this fellow’s mind, but I took a different approach to investigating some possibilities and this is what I came across:

    Latin Translation: http://latindictionary.wikidot.com/verb:haerere

    To cling, stick, be attached

Main forms: Haereo, Haerere, Haesi, Haesus
    —————————————————————–
    1140 = MCXL
    in Roman numerals
    M = 1 000. C = 100. XL = 40.

“Numerals in documents and inscriptions from the Middle Ages sometimes include additional symbols, which today are called “medieval Roman numerals”. Some simply substitute another letter for the standard one (such as “A” for “V”, or “Q” for “D”), while others serve as abbreviations for compound numerals (“O” for “XI”, or “F” for “XL”)”.
    ——————————————————————-
So, based on the info above it could say:

    1140 – to cling….

But this assumes the ‘F’ represents ‘XL’ and drops the extra “H” from Haesus.

    All interesting though…

  7. I came across the following link mentioning Aaron Andrew. Apparently, there is another carving not far from the one in Moab. http://www.canyoncountryzephyr.com/2015/04/01/albert-christensen-aharron-andeew-eccentric-sculptors-kindred-spirits-by-jim-stiles/

    • Hi Nina, I’m pretty sure that is the only carving by Aaron Andrew – Hole in the Rock is something different. An actual home carved in to the stone – one of two that I know of. But, not by Andrew. Thanks though for your interest. It’s a story I continue to find intriguing.

      • You’re right about the carving but this:
        1925
        M.C.F.HHAESUSS. AMERICA
        AHARRON. ANDEREW
        1o iy 29
        1934
…was carved into the rock at Hole in the Rock. There are actual pictures that someone posted on the that webpage.

[You are right Nina and thank you so much for pointing this out to me! I learn something new every day! 🙂 Cindy]

      • The story about this man is very intriguing, for sure.

      • Thanks Nina, I think so too. The symbolism and his ultimate death in an asylum something I am still thinking about. And, may yet blog on again. We’ll see. Have a blessed and happy Yom Teruah! Cindy

      • Nina, I stand corrected and thank you so much for I had not read to the bottom of that article assuming it was about the Christensen work. Interesting it is dated 1925, apparently, Andrew was in the area much longer than thought. Cane Springs where this other carving is located is on the other side of Moab to the south about 12 miles out. I will definitely give this some more thought and thanks again for your persistence in getting me to see this. Much appreciated!
