Selling Soap and Souls

Selling soap. That’s what it was all about. The modern-day soap opera, that is. Millions of American women tune in daily ( and still do) to see what their favorite characters on their favorite tv programs are going to do next. This has been the staple of American television since the early days of the industry. And, the ratings along with the sales of commercial products prove their popularity; not to mention, the longevity of some of these programs which go back now, thirty or forty years or more.

For some reason, in their twisted story lines and tangled love affairs, people (especially women) find escape. But, why?  Why are people drawn to live vicariously through other peoples misery, mistakes and moral failures?  What makes their drama become our drama?  Why do we care, if Steve wants to divorce Sue or Molly finds out, who her real mother is?  It’s only television. These people are not even real. But, for some reason, they become as real to us as our own neighbors and friends, maybe even more so.

This question came to mind today after I read the verdict in the Jodi Arias trial. The sordid, murder love affair that has been making headlines with it’s xxx-rated details for the past month or so.  I was stunned, when I read (though, should not have been)that people were vying daily (standing in line) to get one of the few public seats available at the trial. Many of whom, had traveled to Arizona for that express purpose. 

Are you kidding me? Have people really been that wrapped up in this? And, the answer to that is, yes. And, for those, who did not travel to Arizona, the rest got their daily fix through the news media, who made it their job to feed the public every x- rated detail that they could.  The drama, the emotion and the salacious details of the case drawing people like flies to a rotten piece of meat.

And, like every junkie, it takes more and more to get a fix, a high. Real life drama, now exceeds anything television can come up with.  We want the real deal, up close and personal. Thus, the popularity of reality shows. Like sharks in a feeding frenzy, when, we smell blood, we want it. And, its the job of media to keep the taste of blood in our mouths. A fact, that if, it weren’t so tragic would be almost comical. But, its not.

Friends, it can be hard to get past the media blitz. But, we can. The Bible tells us to put on the mind of Christ, to think on things that are pure and true. We have a choice to turn that channel, to put down that tabloid; to not get caught up in the drama.  Keeping always these words in mind:

“Finally, brethern, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think about these things“.  Philippians 4:8

“Pray for the peace of Jerusalem, they shall prosper, who love thee” Psalm 122:6

  2. Cindy, I have to admit I cannot stomach the Arias trial. It’s beyond me why people get entrapped in all the sordid details of such a crime. I’m too busy helping young single women whose lives are a mess. GOD has called me to mentor young women in 3 different ministries. That’s more than enough real live drama for me. It’s overwhelming at times but I pray for wisdom and discernment. I realize it’s not what I have to offer but how The Holy Spirit guides me to encourage and love on these women and their children.

    Cindy, I prayed again for you this morning. How’s your hearing? Have you received GOD’s direction on whether to stay or move from the Islands?

    [God bless you, Rita in your very important work! I see so many young women, who are in obvious need of a spiritual mentor in their lives. Young women are crying out for help; the toll of multiple relationships, abortions, broken homes and abuse driving them often to acts of misery and despair. I’ll be sure to keep you in my prayers. And, thank you too for your prayers for me! I really appreciate it!

    The hearing has not yet returned to my Left ear and maybe never will; although, it could return partially. Just don’t know. There are worse things, for sure, but, it is frustrating to try to hear everything through one ear; particularly, because my right ear is only about 75 % in moderate tones (and, none in high tones) as it is. My balance has been improving as my brain adjusts to one sided hearing and I’ve started to drive again. Seems weird, when I’m out on the road. Can’t hear approaching traffic from my left side. Reminder to self, to be more mirror cognizant.

    I’ve been feeling a little bit like I’m in limbo. Still on leave from my job. Not sure exactly, when or if I will be leaving, although I believe that is probably likely. The doctor says it could take 2-3 months before, we know exactly where we are at with this ear. I want to see things through with him and hold on to my job benefits as long as I can, so that its covered by insurance.

    In the meantime, I’m growing a little weary of this prolonged “vacation”. Have made small efforts at cleaning things out in preparation for a move. But, lack motivation. Please pray, if you will, that God would give me a clear vision of where he is directing my future. And, thanks again Rita for your prayers and concern. It really means alot to me! Heard the same thing going on with the Zimmerman trial down south, people flocking to get seats to sit in on the trial. 😦 You are right, I do think what they watch/entertain themselves on more and more (what they feed themselves) is what they crave. But it’s not real. Like those sugar substitutes which actually create even greater cravings for sweets, entertainment can affect us in ways we didn’t intend. Unplugging from cable was one of the best things we did. We still have tv on too much, but we have noticed a greater sensitivity to things like this and as we seek God, more heartbreak for the people who seek them. Praying for their souls. May God be revealed to them.
